Jane Fonda by Lou Rie

ABOUT THIS COLLECTION

The Divas of the Big Screen collection features portraits of nine women whose images filled hearts and minds on movie and TV screens and in printed media in the 20th century. They broke with outdated notions of womanhood and femininity to become icons of modern glamour, style, and independence. Two are still going strong—Jane Fonda and Isabella Rossellini—while another, Bettie Page, made her mark as a model. With vivid color compositions and high contrasts using expressive fluorescent paint, these paintings reflect the lights and shadows in the lives of their subjects. They all struggled against a “star system” that insisted on making their personal lives as important as their acting.

Jane Fonda

Daughter of film legend Henry Fonda, she became a star in her own right, winning Oscars for “Klute” (1971) and “Coming Home” (1978). Offscreen, she has ranged far and wide—anti-Vietnam War activist, fitness guru, and now climate-change crusader who has returned to acting in the TV series “Grace and Frankie.”
