ABOUT THIS COLLECTION  
The Ling gymnastics system became fashionable in Europe at the turn of the century and several Swedish instructors opened clinics abroad, or were employed by institutes and health resorts. Theodor Bergquist was one of them. He became director of the Swedish Gymnastic Institute in the Bavarian spa town of Bad Wörishofen, and decided to produce this exercise manual with its delightful “action” photographs.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
The multiple exposures used by this photographer, who is uncredited, make it easy to see the required exercise movements. The technique wasn’t new at the time, and dates back to the 1860s, when photographers figured out how to do it.  Its start was very likely accidental, when film was exposed twice in the same frame. But once discovered, the technique was taken in novel artistic directions, as seen here.
